Anarhija/blok45, Operacija Džabalesku and other experiences

Anarhija/blok 45 is publishing crew from Beograd and they publish books that bring critique of key aspects of mass society (work, obsessive productionism, economy as blackmail, ideology of progress and other "axiomatic certainty's" from that area) for past nine years. In all that they try to create their input connected with books they publish. All books were free (Operacija Džabalesku - roughly translated as Operation Free) from the begining, what meant development of new ways of distribution and special relation with readers. That editorial focus, publishing experience, it's different paths and consequences will be subject of conversation with Aleksa, editor and translator of anarhija/blok45.

Anarchism in practice

Presentation of book "Anarchy Works" by Peter Gelderloos.

Anarchism is the boldest of revolutionary social movements to emerge from the struggle against capitalism, it aims for a world free from all forms of domination and exploitation. But at its heart is a simple and convincing proposition: people know how to live their own lives and organize themselves better than any expert could. Others cynically claim that we need a government to protect us. They claim anarchy is impractical and utopian: it would never work. On the contrary, anarchist practice already has a long record, and has often worked quite well. The histories in this book show that an anarchist society can succeed at enabling all its members to meet their needs and desires.
This book takes examples from around the world, picking through history and anthropology, showing that people have, in different ways and at different times, demonstrated mutual aid, self-organization, autonomy, horizontal decision making, and so forth--the principles that anarchy is founded on--regardless of whether they called themselves anarchists or not. Too well documented to be strictly mythology, and too expansive to be strictly anthropology, this is an inspiring answer to the people who say that anarchists are utopian: a point-by-point introduction to how anarchy can and has actually worked.

Recht auf Stadt (Right to the City), Gentrification and Rote Flora squat in Hamburg

with a3yo and friends

In the rich and growing city of hamburg, rents are getting higher and higher and quarters especially in the inner city changed a lot due to gentrification attempts. In the last years, new strategies and movements under the name of "right to the city" emerged in variouse cities, in hamburg also in the context of St.Pauli commercialisation and the new artist squat "Gaengeviertel". In the "right to the city" federation in hamburg there are by now 44 local social movements, from neighbourhood-initiatives to ecological campaigns, artists and social centres. Some of the demonstrations against gentrification were with up to 4000 people the biggest local events anarchists and left radical took part in. In this context, also new squats were opened and new people came to the movement. Resistance against the exclusion of people by expensive housing and living in the quarters is one of the older fields of radical left and anarchists, which was especially in the 80ies leading to squatting activities in lots of cities in western europe. One of the squats in hamburg, which is still resisting contracts for more than 20 years is the "Rote Flora" in Schanzenviertel-quarter. After being sold by the city 10 years ago, the ending of the contract now in march 2011, is allowing the abolishing of the building. If he is going to do so or if he is going to sell the house is unclear now, but for shure he and politicians can expect resistance of users and solidary groups. The squat is used for cultural events and is well known not only in germany. But there had always been controversal discussions about the perspective and use of autonomous spaces and social centres and how they should look like. We would like to present some of the recent activities and initiatives and discuss and share experiences related to housing, squatting and urban social movements.

See for english information also this link and rote flora.

Anarchist response to sexual violence

Presentation of group Paper Planes

Paper Planes are the group of few friends who share energy and passion to do something with things around them. Our activities are based on friendship, mutual aid and belief that we can change something.
We realized that sexual violence is part of our environment and we can't avoid this reality. We see how many people around us experienced some form of sexual violence and we can't stay quiet.
Our goal is to spread information about sexual violence and educate ourselves about it. To create environment in our communities and active groups where sexual violence and oppressive behaviour has no place, where we can openly talk about it and feel support from our friends and comrades.

All books are in croatian (that's why we leave descriptions without translation), but there will be translation of presentation provided for all non-croatian speakers.

Novela Lenz zauzima istaknuto mjesto u njegovu neveliku opusu.
Pisma se uglavnom odnose na Hesenski glasnik.

Paul Goodman: Crna zastava anarhizma
Knjiga obuhvaća tri Goodmanova eseja od kojih prvi Crna zastava anarhizma govori o studentskom pokretu u Americi. Druga dva eseja su Moralnost znanstvene tehnologije i Psihologija nemoći. Goodman je cijeli život posvetio mogućnosti ostvarenja promjene društva.

Voltairine de Cleyre: Direktna akcija
Pored Direktne akcije tu su još tri njena eseja: Anarhizam, Kako se postaje anarhist i U obranu Emme Goldman i prava eksproprijacije. Voltairine de Cleyre prominentna je američka anarhistkinja i feministkinja, jedna od mnogih važnih žena u anarhističkom pokretu.

M. A. Bakunjin: Manifest Slavenima - P. A. Kropotkin: Omladini
U jednoj knjizi smo reprintirali dva teksta: Bakunjinov Manifest Slavenima i Kropotkinov apel Omladini.

Books will be presented by Hrvoje Jurić, Ankica Čakardić i Marko Strpić

Democracy as Totalitarianism

This talk by Peter Gelderloos will consist of an analysis of democracy as a creation of the elite, an evolution from obviously authoritarian forms of governance, that allows for an even greater control of people's beliefs and the details of people's lives. The anarchist proposition that all government is authoritarian will be explained by showing how democracy, reputedly the best form of government, is a force for domination and social control.
